What structural drafting actually involves
Structural drafting converts an engineer’s design into the shop and general-arrangement drawings a steel fabricator or concreter builds from. The detail is in the connections: bolt groups, weld specifications, member sizes, splice locations and the inspection notes that the relevant standards require to appear on the drawing. For concrete work it means reinforcement layouts, bar scheduling, cover and lap lengths. Get the detailing right and fabrication runs smoothly; get it wrong and the cost shows up on site.
What we detail
- Structural steel — shop drawings, general arrangements, connection details to AS 4100 and welding to AS/NZS 1554.
- Reinforced concrete — reinforcement drawings, bar bending schedules and slab/footing detailing to AS 3600.
- Cold-formed & light-gauge steel — framing to AS/NZS 4600 for sheds and light commercial.
- Tilt-panel packages — panel layouts, lifting and bracing details.
- Industrial sheds & portal frames — full GA-plus-shop-drawing sets.
Common questions
Do you work from an engineer’s design? Yes. We detail from your structural engineer’s design and calculations, or can coordinate with an engineer if you need one. We produce the fabrication-ready documentation, not the structural design itself unless engaged for it.
Which standards do you detail to? AS/NZS 1100 for drawing conventions, AS 4100 for steel, AS 3600 for concrete, AS/NZS 4600 for cold-formed steel, and AS/NZS 1554 for welding — with the load codes in the AS 1170 series informing member sizing.
How is a structural job priced? Fixed-price per project, scoped on package type and connection complexity. You know the cost before we start — we never bill hourly.
