Mining Conveyor System Fabrication

Mining conveyor fabrication: project overview

Full fabrication drawing package for an underground conveyor system including drive units, idler frames, return rollers and walkways. Drawings produced in SolidWorks for 3D assembly verification, then exported to AutoCAD for fabricator-ready shop drawings.

The challenge

The client needed shop-ready drawings for a confined-space underground application with strict clearance envelopes around existing infrastructure. The existing concept drawings lacked the detail needed for fabrication and didn't reference current Australian Standards.

Our approach

We rebuilt the design in a parametric SolidWorks assembly to verify clearances, then generated GA drawings, BOM tables, individual part drawings, weld symbols, surface finishes and weldment cut lists. All annotation conforms to AS/NZS 1100 part 101 and 201.

Outcome

Fabricator received a complete drawing package zero clarification requests. Installation completed without rework, project commissioned 2 weeks ahead of schedule.

How the mining conveyor fabrication work ran

The job started from the mechanical engineer’s general arrangement and a site survey of the existing drift. We modelled the full conveyor line in SolidWorks — stringers, idler frames, drive and tail-end modules, guarding and walkway steel — then generated the AutoCAD fabrication sheets from the model so every dimension traced back to one source of geometry. Underground clearances drove the detailing: modules were sized to fit the cage and the drift profile, splice points were positioned for handling weight limits, and every bolted connection was chosen over welding wherever site assembly conditions made welding impractical.

Deliverables in the fabrication package

The issued set covered general arrangements, individual part drawings with full dimensioning to AS/NZS 1100, weldment details with AS 1554 symbols, bolt schedules, and a marked assembly sequence keyed to the module numbering. Guarding was detailed against the relevant machine-safety requirements, and a separate erection drawing series showed lifting points and temporary works for the underground installation crew. Because part marks, BOM lines and drawing numbers were generated from the model, the fabricator’s estimator priced straight off the package — which is why it produced zero clarification requests.

Standards, software and what transfers to your project

This mining conveyor fabrication package was produced in SolidWorks for the modelling and AutoCAD for the issued sheets, detailed to AS/NZS 1100 drawing practice with AS 1554 weld symbology throughout. The same workflow transfers directly to any materials-handling or heavy mechanical fabrication job: model once, generate the drawings from the model, and let the part-marking system carry the project from estimating through fabrication to site assembly. If your project involves conveyors, chutes, hoppers, access platforms or skid-mounted equipment, the drawing package structure shown here is what your fabricator will ask for — send us the design intent and we will confirm scope and a fixed fee within 24 hours. Turnaround for a package of this size typically runs two to three weeks from receiving the design drawings, with the marking plan issued early so the fabricator can order material while detailing continues — the sequencing decision that bought this project its two-week schedule gain.
