Civil Drafting Services Australia
Road, drainage, earthworks and subdivision documentation drafted in Civil 3D and 12d from your engineer’s design, set up to the council and authority requirements your project is assessed against.
Civil drafting turns a civil engineer’s design into the plans, long sections, cross sections and details that contractors set out and build from, and that councils and authorities assess. On most civil jobs the drawings are also the record of the design surface itself: the levels, grades and setout that every other package hangs off. Optimal Drafting provides civil drafting for consulting engineers, developers and contractors across Australia, working in AutoCAD Civil 3D and 12d.
What we draft
- Roads and pavements — horizontal and vertical alignments, typical sections, cross sections, pavement and kerb details, linemarking and signage plans.
- Stormwater drainage — pit and pipe layouts, longitudinal sections, pit schedules, catchment plans and drainage details.
- Earthworks and bulk grading — design surfaces, cut and fill plans, batter and retaining setout, and volume reporting from the model.
- Subdivision and land development — lot layouts, road and drainage packages, service coordination plans and staging plans for development applications and operational works.
- Sewer and water reticulation — layouts and long sections drafted to the network authority’s standard drawings and requirements.
- Site works for industrial and commercial projects — hardstands, access roads, car parks and on-site drainage that tie a building into its site.
- As-constructed drawings — design drawings updated against survey to record what was actually built.
Model first, then drawings
Good civil documentation is produced from a design model rather than drawn line by line. In Civil 3D or 12d the existing surface comes from survey, the design surface is built from alignments, profiles and corridors, and plans, long sections and cross sections are generated from that model. The practical benefit to the engineer is consistency: when a grade or a pit level changes, every sheet that shows it changes with it, rather than relying on a drafter to find each occurrence.
We work on whichever platform your project already uses. Many councils and consultancies have a preferred format, and moving a live design between Civil 3D and 12d mid-project costs more than it saves, so we match the existing model rather than converting it.
Council and authority requirements
Civil drawings are assessed against more than one set of rules. Local councils publish design and drafting requirements for roads and drainage; water and sewer authorities have their own standard drawings, symbology and submission formats; and state road agencies set requirements for work on their network. These differ from council to council and change over time, so we confirm the governing requirements for each project at the start and set the drawing templates, layers and symbols up to suit, rather than adapting a set after it has been rejected.
Drawing presentation follows AS 1100 conventions for sheets, lines and title blocks, with the project and authority requirements layered on top. For structural elements that sit within a civil package — retaining walls, culverts, headwalls and pit structures — we coordinate with the structural design and our structural drafting team so the two packages agree.
What we need to start
- The engineer’s design, mark-ups or sketches, and the design criteria they work to.
- Survey of existing conditions — ideally as a digital terrain model or point file, plus the survey control.
- The council or authority the work will be assessed by, and any project drafting standard.
- The existing model and title block if we are joining a project already underway.
Engineering design and certification remain with your engineer. We draft from the design and flag inconsistencies we find — a pipe grade that does not suit cover, a level that does not close against survey — for the engineer to resolve before issue.
How civil drafting is quoted
Every civil package is quoted individually, because scope varies widely between a single site drainage plan and a multi-stage subdivision. What shapes a quote is the extent of the works, the number of packages (roads, drainage, earthworks, services), the platform, the authority requirements, and how complete the design inputs are at handover. Send the design and survey through our contact page and we will come back with a scope and quote.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between civil engineering and civil drafting?
Civil engineering is the design work: setting alignments and grades, sizing pipes and pavements, and checking the design against the relevant standards and authority criteria. Civil drafting documents that design as drawings and models that can be assessed and built. The engineer remains responsible for the design and its certification.
Do you work in Civil 3D or 12d?
Both. We work on the platform your project, council or consultancy already uses, and deliver native files plus PDF drawing sets.
Can you prepare as-constructed drawings?
Yes. We update the design drawings against the as-constructed survey so the record reflects what was built, in the format the asset owner requires.
Can you join a project that is already underway?
Yes. We pick up from the existing model, templates and title block so the set stays consistent, and confirm the current revision status with the engineer before we start.
